i heard about Phantom Alert first from the 4 Senators that wanted to ban the service on TV. I remember thinking if politicians are trying to ban it it must we worth investigating. Then my brother sent me the demo video [..] . I said cool idea and I got the 1 year plan.

I have been using it for several months now both my Garmin and android HTC EVO. It has already saved me from speed traps in Florida, speed cameras in Maryland and red light cameras in DC. I highly recommended to everyone who owns smartphones and GPS.

Pros: Accurate alerts most of the time. Accurate on red light cameras, speed caemras and most speed traps. some false alerts but it makes up for it when they get it right. Easy to instal on Android phone (simple as downloading app from store and entering pin number to activate. Garmin install was alos fairly simple (just follow instuctions. connect device to computer and download... tip read the instuctions)

Cons: they need to advertise more. not a lot of people know about it. If more people knew the databse would be bigger and more accurtae. some false alerts. no need for rail raod crossings. i dont drive in the mid west. Also I wish I could report locations as I see them from my Garmin. This feature is only for smart phones :(

recommend: Yes!...especially if you drive in any state that has photo cameras...and if you let others drive your car. Its the owner who gets stuck withe the tickets. It happend to me. I only let my family drive my car if they use phantomalert on Garmin that is in the car

Affordable: Yes. I think its paid for itself.

Ok....So maybe it's part my Fault for not reading the fine print I guess? I thought I'd try it for 30 days and if I liked it then maybe I'd join. I decided it wasn't worth it to me, but my credit card continues to be charged.Now I am having a hard time getting out of the monthly loop of being charged $9.95! Several emails and now I've had to call them (at their request) long distance only to get a voice mail recording. The email asked me to call and give them my credit card number to proceed with the cancellation...what? You have my credit info I'm being billed on it! I do not...repeat I DO not appreciate this kind of customer service especially when it is costing me extra money.

UPDATE--9/26/2011 My subscription was finally cancelled (many weeks ago). I must say once communications were re established with customer service PhantomAleart bent over backwards to make it right for me. I believe they were not "trying to pull a fast one" It was just one of those things that sometimes happens. While I still think the service is probably of better use in larger cities (more user input) it does have usefullness for just about everyone. School and rail crossing alearts especially. Like anything that requires user input-the more info you send them about your area the better it will become for everyone. I upgraded my original star rating because I feel they are an honest company and I miss judged.

Living in the Washington, DC area and using back roads for short cuts, I needed a device of this nature since 1. going 30 miles per hour is impossible, and 2. the D.C. area has a speed camera/red light camera at most intersections now. It's an okay overall tool. It does identify speed cameras, some speed traps. The most irritating ones that it responds to are the mobile locations, because those locations beep constantly, and are usually outdated. Also if you are on the Daytona 500 (the beltway), I ignore most of those beeps because they are inaccurate. This device is most effective on back roads, or main roadways; not the highway, beltway.

If you do a direct installation, it is difficult, and customer service is not helpful.
UPDATE: This has saved me lots of money since I drive more often.
